The lecture aims at offering a comprehensive understanding of the process and driving factors of regional economic integration in Europe and Asia. The course starts with a look at the idea of economic dynamics in general followed by an introduction to the theoretical concept of economic integration with reference to key contributions to the literature. On the basis of this core knowledge, the development of modern economic (dis-)integration in Europe will be covered from a politico-economic perspective (with a focus on the European Union but also covering other selected examples) and with particular emphasis on the experience of Eastern European accession countries and Brexit. With a focus on economic and institutional development, an investigation on the dynamics underlying the economic rise of Asia and the process of regional economic integration is offered. Students are encouraged to explore the role of selected leading Asian economies for regional economic and institutional development and discuss the possible implications for the world.
